The gift card categories include Arts and Entertainment; Baby and Kids; Dining and Food; Fashion and Beauty; Gaming; Gifts and Variety; Home Office and Garden; Sports and Outdoor and Travel and Leisure.
You can buy digital gift cards from a range including eBay, JB Hi-Fi, Rebel, The Iconic, Uber, Woolworths and Ticketmaster. The site also offers special deals, such as 15 percent off Catch gift cards, 15 percent off The Iconic on Wednesday, 10 percent off Uber on Thursday and 10 percent off Rebel Sport on Friday.
According to a survey Australians spend over $2.5 billion on gift cards each year for family and friends with 90 percent of Aussies either giving or receiving gift cards.
Paypal launched the offer in partnership with 40 retailers, including Rebel Sport, RedBalloon, the Iconic and Adrenaline. The storefront is also expected to provide opportunities for a raft of other retail brands as the service is expanded. Paypal said vouchers are a popular go-to gifting option for Australians, and consumers will increasingly look online, rather than in-store, for the cards in the coming years.

According to Emily Curlewis said Paypal Australia shoppers are being driven towards digital gift cards by their concern for the environment, citing commissioned survey data that found 63% of shoppers would prefer a digitised option for vouchers.
Queensland University of Technology associate professor Dr Gary Mortimer told that Paypal has looked at a growing market, they’ve looked at the smaller players already providing the service and this is a way of taking their existing account holders and leveraging that. Jumping onto an online platform means that small retailers can move from small geographic markets to millions of people nationally.
Mortimer said that recent regulatory changes to gift cards in Australia were also encouraging adoption of digital consumption as consumers became more accustomed to longer expiry times on vouchers.
The New South Wales government passed laws last year that mandated a three-year expiry period on gift cards sold within the state, which prompted many retailers to simply remove expiry on cards nationwide. The federal government has also proposed extending expiry dates for all gift cards to a minimum of three years.
Paypal’s platform will enable customers to leave personalised messages or schedule gift deliveries, while the company will be offering a 15% discount on selected vouchers too.
According to a news while Aussies are comfortable with the online space, gift cards is an area which seems to be ripe for digital disruption. Research by PayPal found that more than a third of Australians have purchased a plastic gift card because there wasn’t an equivalent digital option available and that 63 percent of Australians would prefer to receive a digital gift card over a plastic gift card because it is more convenient. Additionally, almost half of Australians would prefer to receive a digital gift card over a plastic gift card because they would be less likely to lose it.
